I like this one. I'm wondering if the punctuation was intentional to blur whether it is the chickens vividly remembering the fox and perching on the rail in fear ... or the narrator remembering the actions of the chickens after the fox has already struck (perching on the rail to escape the fox and the narrator surprised by it).
